As you know I am a big advocate of wearing sunscreen everyday. Not only does it protect you from burning and skin cancer, but everyone in the beauty industry says that it is the number one thing you can do each day to keep youthful skin and battle those fine lines that we keep seeing more of as the years pass us by.
I have tried and tested many sunscreens over the years and have come to have some favourites. There is one though that has been a stand out, as my skin loves it in all seasons which is super rare for me as my skin is so different in the winter then it is in the summer. So, because of this, when anyone asks me for a sunscreen recommendation I will always recommend TBH Skin Shady as to me it seems like it would suit most skin types.
As this is my number one recommendation, I wanted to reach out and speak to them in depth about sunscreen, what they had in mind while creating it, and how to use it properly.
My chat with tbh...
Tara: Thanks so much for chatting to me today! As you know, I am a massive fan of your sunscreen. Skin Shady is a product that I can wear all year round, whether my skin is oily or dry, which tells me it's suitable for a lot of skin types which I find so rare for sunscreens. Did you have skin types in mind when formulating Skin Shady?
TBH: Tbh Skincare is a brand built specifically for acne prone customers. We knew that our customers wanted to protect their skin every day by wearing SPF, but we also knew that it was one of the products they were most afraid of. When it comes to having breakout prone skin, you can be damned if you do, and damned if you don’t. If those people with acne prone skin get burnt, they often breakout as a result, and if they wear sunscreen, they also break out! We wanted to make sure that we could protect our customer’s skin without causing flare ups for them.
Tara: What makes your sunscreen so versatile when it comes to skin types?
TBH: We have created a light, non-greasy product that suits oily skin types but provides enough hydration for those with dry skin. It is the perfect in between, so is well suited to a lot of skin types. Our main objective of course when creating it though, was to make sure it was non comedogenic and oil free so that it was friendly to breakout prone skin.
Tara: Many of my followers suffer with sensitive skin, dermatitis and rosacea. Would Skin Shady be a good sunscreen for them to use? What ingredients should people with sensitive skin avoid?
TBH: The ingredients in this product have been selected to minimise irritation without compromising on protection. That said, always discuss the product and ingredients with your doctor before using a new product if you do suffer from any of these conditions. Sensitive skin has many causes and what may cause irritation in one person will not in another. I would not single out any particular ingredient as being bad for sensitive skin because the way it is used, how much is used and what else is used (in conjunction with any given ingredient) is going to change how irritating that ingredient is.
Tara: Should we look for sunscreen with “no chemicals or nasties”?
TBH: In short, no. There is no such thing as a “chemical-free” sunscreen (even water is a chemical). Also, the term “nasties” is very ambiguous and can therefore be misleading to consumers.
Tara: Should we reapply sunscreen when wearing makeup?
TBH: Ideally yes, you should be reapplying your sunscreen every 2 hours if you are spending that time consistently in the sun. We have a handy trick for those who aren’t sure how they might be able to do this… keep a beauty blender in your bag, pop your sunscreen on the back of your hand and then dab the beauty blender in sunscreen and use this to re-apply the sunscreen lightly over the top of your makeup during the day!
Tara: Sunscreen tips with wearing makeup?
TBH: Wearing SPF with makeup is totally workable so long as you find one that sits well under makeup and doesn’t make it slide off during the day, or even worse pill as you are applying products over the top. Finding a good formula can make a world of difference when it comes to wearing SPF with makeup. Looking for a lightweight formula that is oil free and dries down to a matte or satin finish would be my tip!
Tara: What order should we apply sunscreen when applying other products and makeup?
TBH: Sunscreen should always be applied as the last step of any skincare routine, or as the first step of any makeup routine. Be careful when applying moisturizers and serums underneath makeup. Too many other products could interfere with your SPF and its effectiveness!
Tara: Should we wear different types of sunscreen for different occasions?
TBH: In short no, SPF 50+ is always the best and safest way to go. Even if you are spending your day indoors, you are still being exposed to the sun when you are sitting in your car, sitting in any direct sunlight even indoors and even on the most overcast of days. You should always have the maximum protection on, all of the time. You could choose to switch out different brands and formulas of SPF50+ of course, depending on your preference of how they feel sitting on your skin in different scenarios. For example, the SPF you wear on your morning run might be different to the one you wear under makeup each day. But no matter what, they should all be SPF 50+.
Tara: Can you use a chemical sunscreen after moisturizing?
TBH: I would caution against combining sunscreens with other products. In some instances it may be safe, but sunscreens are only tested as stand-alone products and so we can only be sure that you are receiving the full SPF when it is used by itself.
